What to check Before Sending Your Child to Kindergarten

When children reach a certain age, parents often decide to send them to kindergartens without knowing if their child is prepared to attend one. You can tell if your child has reached the right age to attend a nursery by looking at some red flags. Read more?

Inability to engage/play/communicate with other children: – If a child is not able to communicate or play with other children despite reaching a certain age it is not ready for going to a preschool. Some children are interested in playing games that are intended for a younger age. It is important to rethink the decision of allowing your child into a Kindergarten. Such children need more counselling before being sent to a Kindergarten.

Wild behavior/ Playing very aggressively: – If you child acts in a manner that could harm him, he is probably not ready to attend kindergarten. Some children enjoy playing very aggressively with big toys that can hurt them. Some children tend to throw things. It could also be dangerous to the child or others. Children with such problems need counselling before attending a kindergarten.

Unable to talk about their motions, or inability use the toilet independently: – If the child cannot speak about what they are doing then he/she is not ready to go to kindergarten. The child should also be able independently to use the toilet. Also, children should be able open and close the latches of the doors.

Inability for child to be separated from parents for more than a couple of hours: – When a child cannot live independently for at least a couple of hours, he/she is not considered ready for kindergarten. A child should be able of living without its parents for a period of 5-6 hours before being sent to kindergarten.

Inability or unwillingness to follow instructions. – When a child cannot follow the instructions given by the instructor, they are not ready to enter kindergarten. Children can be unwilling to listen or follow instructions. Children who are not following instructions need to be counselled by their parents before being sent to a Kindergarten.

In an international preschool or kindergarten, there is still a well-trained staff to help children at each step. However, it’s important that you make sure your child has these skills before sending him/her to a nursery.
